Sensitive Basil (Jared Leto) has only ever known a sheltered aristocratic life under the roof of his controlling father (Derek Jacobi). When commoner Bob Mannion (Christian Slater) rescues him from a near-death situation, Basil is introduced to a new life - one in which he pursues the passionate love of a beautiful middleclass woman (Claire Forlani) and for whom he will willingly forsake his aristocratic position and wealth. However, secrets will be revealed that will leave Basil betrayed by love and friendship, disowned by his family and the victim of a sinister plot of revenge.
