The early morning tranquility of a diner is shattered when a lone gunman opens fire, killing innocent people and changing lives forever. The survivor includes waitress Carla (Kate Beckinsale) a single mum struggling to cope: 13-year-old Anne (Dakota Fanning) who turns to God to explain the murder of her father Dr. Bruce Laraby (Guy Pearce) who suffers a loss of confidence with devasting implications and Charlie Archenault and his daughter Kathy must confront his compulsive gambling habit in order to repair their relationship.
